If God commanded the Christmas season where would He have placed the emphasis? Since people have made this time of the year the season for “giving”, perhaps the following illustration is helpful in answering this question.

One Christmas season a man who usually mailed cards and gave gifts decided to give his “giving” a different twist. He was going to send a message about a gift that everyone need and would appreciate. Here is part of his message:

Could it be that the most redemptive, healing, saving gift we can offer to another person is ourselves? Not our pretenses and our pettiness, certainly not our wealth or wisdom or skills, but our basic humanity. Our world cries out for many things, but I suspect the biggest want behind the cries is for authentic, open loving persons.

Certainly the above thought has a Biblical ring – “If I give my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.”   (1 Corinthians 13:3).

If Christmas had its origin with God and since the holiday season emphasizes giving, the Lord would have wanted us to emulate Him by giving of ourselves to Him and by loving others.

INTERESTINGLY, WE CAN COMMIT OUR LIVES TO GOD AND GIVE LOVE TO OTHERS EVERY DAY IN EVERY SEASON OF EVERY YEAR.
